A Misshapen Tooth Might Be Addressed by a Dental Crown

Posted .

Ideally, each of your teeth should have a specific shape and orientation that matches its partner in your bite pattern. However, genetics, the loss of a primary tooth to tooth decay, and other factors can sometimes cause a tooth to emerge from the gums with misshapen tooth enamel.

Without professional treatment, this tooth could eventually fracture, cause another tooth to fracture, or eventually lead to a problem with dental attrition. Sometimes a misshapen tooth can also affect the appearance of your smile.

In some of these cases, a dentist like Dr. Brandon Schvaneveldt can replace the tooth’s enamel layer with a dental crown. This treatment process starts with him numbing the tooth and removing the original tooth enamel layer. The underlying dentin will eventually serve as an anchoring abutment for the dental crown.

An impression will be created of the abutment as well as any related teeth in your dentition. It will be sent to a professional dental lab where the dental crown will be created from dental grade material. If it is made from porcelain, it can be shaded to perfectly match the tooth enamel of the neighboring teeth.

You will need to return to see Dr. Brandon Schvaneveldt when your dental crown is ready. Then he will use a strong dental adhesive to secure it to the abutment.
