If you’re a wrestler, you’re probably focusing on being faster, more efficient, and stronger. These are all great things to focus on, but you also need to focus on your smile. Whether you believe it or not, your smile can be in grave danger this wrestling season. So, to help you keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape, our dentist, Dr. Brandon Schvaneveldt, has some tips for you.
First, wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can protect your smile when you get hit in the mouth. We all know that’s a common occurrence when you wrestle. Wearing a mouthguard can help you avoid oral injury. Some common injuries include chipped, broken, and knocked-out teeth as well as damaged or injured oral tissues, like the gums and tongue.
Second, avoid drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks contain high amounts of sugar. As you may already know, sugar creates cavities. So, if you want to avoid cavities, drink water instead. If this isn’t possible, just rinse your mouth with water after drinking the sports drink.
